Where is Warhol?
Where Wally is? We don’t know. But a certain Warhol has sneaked into the picture here.
He turned a simple can of tomato soup into the motif for a work of art. Ditto for celebrities like Marilyn Monroe or James Dean. We’re talking about Andy Warhol, probably the most important representative of America’s pop art scene. His works are legend because he knew how to make art out of the mundane. Warhol excised objects from their pop-cultural context, silkscreened their images onto paper or canvas, defamiliarised them in garish colours.
It was his way of criticising the typical distortion of reality in the media. Catherine Ingram and Andrew Rae pay homage to Warhol’s legacy with a book that opts not only for beautiful illustrations but also for a beautiful approach. The works are presented in hidden pictures in the style of the Where’s Wally series. Only with Warhol instead of Wally.
White hair, sunglasses: Andy Warhol as a comic figure. He’s hiding in this picture somewhere. Can you find him?
